‘Thunder go fire you’ — Super Falcons star Esther Okoronkwo raises alarm over marriage threat from online admirer

Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has not only become Nigeria’s attacking talisman at WAFCON 2024 but has also been forced to confront unwanted personal attention.

 Okoronkwo shared a screenshot via Snapchat revealing a bizarre direct message from a fan with a chilling caption that read: “Abeg o see threat.”

The user initially sent a message and joked:  “Abeg how much be your bride price?  I wan marry you.” 

When she didn’t reply, the sender returned days later and escalated to: “If you no marry me thunder go fire you.” 

It’s a jarring intersection of fame and vulnerability as she prepares for the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final in Rabat on Saturday 26 July, where Nigeria will face hosts Morocco at the Olympic Stadium.

Okoronkwo’s WAFCON story reads like a fairytale.

 Initially absent from the starting line‑up, she was introduced at half‑time during Nigeria’s opening 3–0 win over Tunisia. 

Within 45 minutes she transformed the attacking rhythm of the game.

Her slick link‑up play, vision and movement earning her the Player of the Match award.

 She rattled the crossbar and provided the assist for Nigeria’s third goal.

However, her defining moment came in the quarter‑final demolition of Zambia. 

In her first WAFCON start, Okoronkwo scored once and created two assists—including a spectacular free‑kick delivered with precision, leading the Super Falcons to a commanding 5–0 victory and the semi-finals.

Whether Nigeria lift continental glory in Rabat or not, Esther Okoronkwo’s WAFCON journey has already become about more than goals.
