They listen to me - Osimhen reveals how players react to his first Super Eagles captain
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen has spoken with pride and emotion after captaining the Nigerian national team for the first time in their 3–1 victory over Uganda.
Osimhen was one of just three players retained in the starting lineup and was handed the captain’s armband following the decision to rest regular captain Wilfred Ndidi ahead of the knockout stages.
The Super Eagles’ win secured their place in the round of sixteen, where they will face Mozambique.
What Osimhen said
Speaking to reporters in the mixed zone after the match, the 25-year-old described the experience of leading Nigeria as both special and empowering.
He said, “It feels so good. For me, it’s beautiful to try to lead the team. I believe I have gained enough experience to lead the team, and the coach trusts me. So they listen to me just as I listen to them.”
The forward admitted that wearing the armband added an extra layer of responsibility to his performance on the pitch, pushing him to be more vocal and aware throughout the game.
According to Osimhen, the captaincy role also strengthened his sense of belonging within the squad, particularly in moments that required leadership beyond football.
“It gives you more responsibility,” he explained, referring to his role in communicating with the referee.
