Despite the significant financial outlay Liverpool have made in acquiring attackers this summer transfer window, club captain Virgil Van Dijk has expressed a desire for more signings in the forward areas.
What Van Dijk said
The Reds faced Crystal Palace in the Community Shield today, losing in a penalty shoot-out after a 2-2 draw in regular time.
He spoke to talkSPORT for the game and was asked about Liverpool's transfer activity, stating that the exit of Luis Diaz to Bayern and Darwin Nunez to Al Hilal necessitated the signing of another attacker.
"Well, we just lost Darwin. He went to Saudi and we lost Lucho [Luis Diaz]; obviously, he went to Bayern,” the Dutch defender said.
"I think there's always room for an attacker in order to strengthen us, so let's see what the window brings in terms of the balance of the team."
Liverpool's transfer activity
Van Dijk’s sentiments tally with the club's, as despite signing Hugo Ekitike for €91 million and Florian Wirtz for €117.5 million, they are eyeing a swoop for Newcastle's Alexander Isak.
Liverpool have already submitted a bid worth £110 million plus add-ons rejected by the Magpies; however, they are still pushing to complete the deal. The Reds have also signed Milos Kerkez and Jeremie Frimpong this summer, taking their total spend to about £265 million.
