The Best FIFA: Nigeria Super Eagles captain Troost-Ekong named top 22 defender
William Troost-Ekong, the captain of Nigeria's Super Eagles, has been recognised as one of the world's top defenders with his nomination for The Best FIFA Men’s 11 Defender category.
The announcement, made early Friday, highlights Troost-Ekong's impressive performances over the past year, placing him alongside notable players such as Antonio Rüdiger, Dani Carvajal, and Alessandro Bastoni.

Troost-Ekong's standout year included leading Nigeria to the final of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023, where he scored three goals and was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
His leadership on the field was instrumental in guiding the Super Eagles through a successful campaign, culminating in a hard-fought final against hosts Côte d'Ivoire.
In addition to his international success, Troost-Ekong also enjoyed club triumphs with PAOK in Greece, where he helped them secure the Greek League title and a place in the UEFA Champions League.

Lookman is nominated in the Best Attacker category after an outstanding season that included a hat trick in the Europa League final.
Voting for The Best FIFA awards is open until December 10, 2024, with winners set to be announced in early 2025.
