The arrogance - Shearer reveals why Manchester Utd sacked Amorim
Former England captain Alan Shearer has launched a scathing critique of former Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim, accusing him of arrogance in the wake of the club’s remarkable resurgence under interim head coach Michael Carrick.
Manchester United have enjoyed a stunning reversal of fortunes since Carrick, 45, stepped into the interim role, delivering a string of eye-catching victories against top opposition.
Under Carrick’s stewardship, United have produced performances that few predicted just weeks earlier.
The Red Devils stunned second-placed Manchester City with a commanding 2–0 victory. That momentum continued when United edged out league leaders Arsenal in a thrilling 3–2 win.
What Shearer said
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer did not hold back as he reflected on Amorim’s time at Old Trafford and contrasted it with Carrick’s early impact.
“What on earth is Ruben Amorim sat doing, thinking, looking at those two performances? I mean honestly, I don’t know what he’ll be thinking,” Shearer said.
The former Newcastle and England striker suggested Amorim’s refusal to adjust his tactics ultimately cost him his job.
He added, “It’s absolutely crazy not try and change formation. The arrogance to say, ‘No, I’m not doing any other thing. This is my way or the highway.’”
Shearer went on to argue that Amorim failed to recognise when his approach was no longer effective.
“To not even shift or to accept that this is probably not working, ‘Maybe I should try something else.’ He put all his eggs into that basket, and if that didn’t work, he was done. And it didn’t,” he added.
