That's what I care about — Ademola Lookman says he doesn't worry about emulating William Troost-Ekong
Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman has expressed his disinterest in winning the AFCON Player of the Tournament, insisting that his main and only focus is limited to collective success with the team.
What Lookman said
The Atalanta man is the leading candidate for the tournament's Most Valuable Player with his seven-goal contributions in only four matches. He is also in contention for the Golden Boot, as he is only one goal behind the top scorer, Brahim Diaz.
Asked about emulating William Troost-Ekong’s 2023 campaign and winning the competition’s MVP, he said, “No. Personally, I’m just thinking about the team winning.”
“Now we’re in the quarterfinals, and our next opponent will be another strong team. We scored four goals against Mozambique, and it was a big performance from the team; that’s what I care about.”
Lookman’s exceptional tournament so far
As Pulse Sports reported, Lookman is torching AFCON 2025, not just with goals but as the creative force outpacing everyone in Morocco, boasting 12 key passes through four matches.
The Atalanta wizard leads in goal involvements (7), assists (4), and three goals, embodying Nigeria's attacking menace under Eric Chelle.
Slotting into a fluid No. 10 behind Super Eagles’ striker duo Victor Osimhen and Akor Adams, the 28-year-old drifts left to link with Alex Iwobi, unleashing unpredictability. His stats dazzle: three big chances created, 1.8 expected assists per game (tournament best), and the highest player rating.
Meanwhile, Lookman has now scored four goals for the Super Eagles in AFCON knockout stage games. If he scores once more, he will become Nigeria’s top scorer in non-third-place playoff Cup of Nations knockout stage games, matching Rashidi Yekini (5).
