The defender played an important role at the MKM Stadium on Saturday, opening the scoring as Hull stunned Michael Carrick's Manchester United 2-0 in their Premier League opener.

Ajayi's goal helped lay the foundation for a historic afternoon that marked Hull City's first Premier League goal in nine years and their first-ever Premier League victory over the 20-time English champions.

“I'm buzzing to get the goal” - Ajayi

Speaking to TNT Sports after the match, Ajayi admitted scoring on such a significant occasion made the victory even more special.

“It was amazing. It kind of capped off the really good start that we had,” Ajayi said.

The defender felt Hull deserved to take the lead after creating several early opportunities.

He added, “We had a couple of chances before that which we didn't manage to put away, but obviously that one got us into the lead, and also gave us something to protect, but also build on.

“I'm buzzing to get the goal to get us underway. I'm happy it left us getting three points.”

Despite defeating one of England's biggest clubs, Ajayi insisted Hull have no intention of getting carried away.

With many predicting a difficult season for the newly promoted side, the Nigerian centre-back said the squad's confidence comes from within rather than external opinions.

He added, “We're not really focusing on outside noise. We're just worried about what goes on in the changing room.”

Ajayi revealed the players have complete belief in one another and are determined to keep working hard.

“We know what we've got in the changing room, we believe in ourselves, and we back ourselves to do our best every single day,” he concluded.
