The debilitating loss on Saturday’s earliest fixture turned up the heat on manager Michael Carrick and his marquee summer signings.

Much of the post-match vitriol was directed squarely at Youri Tielemans, who delivered a disastrous performance on his competitive debut for the Red Devils.

Disaster on opening day

Hull City were widely billed by pundits to suffer instant relegation this season, making the opening fixture appear like a routine victory on paper.

Instead, Carrick’s first full season in permanent charge began in the worst possible fashion at the MKM Stadium.

First-half set-piece goals from Super Eagles ace Semi Ajayi and former Real Betis star Nobel Mendy unravelled Manchester United, exposing tactical frailties and a glaring lack of midfield control or steel.

Tielemans was supposed to be the £35 million midfield anchor capable of dictating the tempo and unlocking deep defensive blocks, with Mikel Obi even describing the acquisition as a clinical masterclass.

Instead, the former Aston Villa playmaker looked entirely out of his depth before being mercifully substituted in the 67th minute.

The eye test was incredibly damning, but the underlying numbers published by statistical platform WhoScored painted an even grimmer picture of his debut.

Youri Tielemans

During his time on the pitch, the Belgian registered zero shots, zero chances created, zero through balls, and zero dribbles completed.

His defensive contributions were equally non-existent, finishing the match with zero tackles, zero interceptions, zero clearances, and zero aerial duels won.

Social media fumes

Furious Manchester United supporters, and concerned onlookers immediately flooded social media to dissect the £35 million acquisition.

Many fans openly questioned his physicality, wondering if the 29-year-old possesses the necessary engine to survive in Carrick's midfield setup.

Others sarcastically noted that his invisible performance perfectly explained why Aston Villa were willing to let him leave.
