Salah’s Ballon d’Or claim

For much of the current season, the former Roma star was the front-runner for the Ballon d’Or, as his weekly talismanic performances for the Reds catapulted him to the top of many speculative rankings.

However, while they have been confirmed as Premier League champions, Liverpool crashed out of the League Cup, FA Cup, and Champions League in disappointing fashion, which seemingly crashed Salah’s Ballon d’Or charge, with names like Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Ousmane Dembele having surpassed him in newly made rankings—albeit speculative.

What Salah said

France Football, the organisers of the highly coveted award, sat down with the 33-year-old for an in-depth discussion, in which he admitted to desiring the Ballon d’Or. However, he added that he wanted the win for his people, as no Egyptian had ever won the award, especially not one from a village like his, Nagrig, a village in the Gharbia Governorate, Egypt.

“It’s not in my hands, but obviously, one day I would like to win the Ballon d’Or for my people,” Salah said. “When you come from a village in Egypt, as a child, it’s difficult to dream of the Ballon d’Or. It was when I came to Liverpool that I started to think that, maybe, one day… But if I don’t win it, my career will still be successful.

“I’m only 32; several winners in recent years have been in their thirties. So, who knows? And then, next season promises to be exciting with the defence of our title with Liverpool and the Champions League, the CAN with Egypt and the World Cup.”

Salah's chances—albeit slim according to the bookmakers—of still winning the award are down to his sheer volume of output this season. He is on course to win the Premier League Golden Boot with 28 goals, and his 56 direct goal involvements in all competitions are unmatched by any other player in the top-five leagues.
