This season, however, Benzema has struggled to hit the same heights, with injuries affecting his start to the season.

Regardless of his slow start, the Frenchman has managed to score 19 goals in 29 appearances for Real Madrid in all competitions.

Benzema, 35, is out of contract at the end of the season, but both parties are expected to agree to a new one-year extension.

Real Madrid keen on Arsenal's Gabriel Jesus

However, the situation with Benzema means Real Madrid are on the lookout for a suitable replacement to lead the club in the coming years.

According to Defensa Central, Real Madrid have identified Arsenal and Brazil international, Gabriel Jesus as a possible long-term successor to Benzema.

Real Madrid also believed that Jesus would provide the club with strength in depth prior to Benzema's potential departure in 2024.

Reports claim Los Blancos are admirers of the Brazilian's versatility, having previously shown he is adept at playing on the wings as well as through the middle.

The reigning European champions may find it difficult to prise Jesus away from Arsenal as the Gunners will be expected to make any deal difficult for Madrid to complete.

Despite missing a chunk of the first part of the season due to injury, Jesus has five goals and seven assists in 23 matches.
