The first leg of the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League semi-final delivered a historic nine-goal thriller as Paris Saint-Germain narrowly edged Bayern Munich 5-4 in an all-time classic.
However, the pulsating encounter was marred by a controversial penalty decision that saw both Bayern manager Vincent Kompany and Nigerian icon Asisat Oshoala voicing their frustrations.
Record-breaking UCL tie featues controversial handball
The match at the Parc des Princes was a breathtaking display of offensive football, snapping PSG’s five-game losing streak against the German giants.
Harry Kane opened the scoring early with a record-setting penalty, but the hosts responded through a Khvicha Kvaratskhelia strike and a João Neves header.
While Michael Olise briefly equalised, the momentum swung back to PSG just before halftime when Ousmane Dembélé converted a contentious penalty following an Alphonso Davies handball.
Despite trailing 5-2 after the break, Bayern refused to collapse. Dayot Upamecano and Luis Díaz scored in quick succession to set up a nerve-wracking finale.
Controversy unites Kompany and Oshoala
While the football was sublime, the decision to award PSG a penalty for Davies' handball sparked serious complaints during and after the game.
Super Falcons legend Asisat Oshoala took to social media to vent her frustration, stating on X, “This shitty penalty calls have to stop man. wtf is this 🤦🏽♀️”

Bayern boss Vincent Kompany echoed this sentiment in his post-match comments, agreeing that the call changed the complexion of the tie. “The penalty against us was highly debatable. The ball hits the body first and then his arm,” Kompany remarked.
Despite the loss, he remains optimistic for the return leg, noting that “PSG simply won't accept doing things differently. And neither will we. That's how both teams are!” He concluded with a warning for the Parisians: “The atmosphere next week at Allianz Arena will be crazy.”
Bayern Munich will host PSG in the second leg of the tie in one week, hoping to overturn the deficit and reach a first final since their 2020 victory.
