Osimhen vs Icardi: He will never accept this — Analyst reveals big problem at Galatasaray
Turkish football analyst Fuat Akdağ has warned that a storm is brewing at Galatasaray as Mauro Icardi is unhappy being Victor Osimhen's deputy.
Osimhen was the top scorer in the Super Lig last season, leading the Cim-Bom to the league title. In addition to being the club's record transfer signing—by some distance—it is no surprise he is the first-choice striker.
However, the Argentina international had achieved a similar feat before Osimhen joined. Also, the Nigerian has missed games this season in which Icardi stepped up.
What Akdag said
Icardi not only stepped up; he was his usual prolific self, with five league goals so far, compared to Victor's two. However, immediately after the Nigerian returned from injury, Icardi was relegated to the bench.
There have been rumours that the former PSG man is unhappy with his current status, and Akdag echoed those sentiments.
“Icardi will never accept being a substitute,” Akdağ said, per Habersarikirmizi, relayed by the Daily Post.
“I said it the day Galatasaray signed Osimhen, ‘Coach Okan’s job is very difficult.’ This is a fact. It is very difficult indeed. This difficulty continues.
“This problem will continue as long as Icardi and Osimhen are together. I don’t know how Coach Okan will solve it, but this problem will always exist. Icardi will never accept this; he is not that type of player.”
Osimhen and Icardi
As stated earlier, Icardi was the talisman at Galatasaray before Osimhen signed. When the Nigerian was brought in on loan last season, the messaging from the club was that Okan Buruk would play a front two consisting of both players.
They started that way, and it worked out well before Icardi sustained an ACL injury, leaving Osimhen to almost single-handedly propel the Lions to the league and cup double.
With the arrival of Ilkay Gundogan and other forward signings like Leroy Sane, it has become complicated to play both Osimhen and Icardi from the start.
