The landmark announcement was earlier made in June following a high-level strategic meeting between the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) in Abuja, as officials unveiled sweeping reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria's top-flight league.
Record prize money for NPFL clubs
NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko said the new prize structure represents a major step towards improving the commercial value and competitiveness of domestic football.
“A major highlight of the meeting was that the champions of the 2026/27 NPFL season will receive a minimum prize money of ₦1 billion,” Dikko said.

He added that the runners-up would receive ₦500 million, while the third-placed team would earn ₦300 million, subject to official confirmation by league authorities.
According to Dikko, the enhanced financial rewards form part of broader efforts by the NSC and NFF leadership to improve the welfare of players and coaches while making the league more attractive to investors and supporters.
$7.5 million EUROMATCH sponsorship deal
The prize money increase follows the unveiling of a three-year, $7.5 million title sponsorship agreement between the NPFL and EUROMATCH.
The deal, worth $2.5 million per season, was officially announced in Abuja on Wednesday ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye revealed that 60 per cent of the sponsorship revenue would go directly to clubs.
“The decision to channel the larger share of the sponsorship proceeds directly to clubs was aimed at ensuring that the league's commercial growth translated into tangible benefits for players,” Elegbeleye explained.
