Nigeria vs Morocco: Osimehn, Akor, Lookman toothless, Bassey steely — Super Eagles Player Ratings
Despite Calvin Bassey's Man of the Match showing, poor performances from Nigeria's typically excellent attackers doomed the Super Eagles to a penalty shootout defeat to the Atlas Lions of Morocco.
Here is how Super Eagles players performed individually in Nigeria vs Morocco:
Stanley Nwabali (8/10):
Stanley Nwabali had not been called upon to make a save since the game against Tanzania, but in this game, he made five.
He was solid between the sticks and came out to claim everything that flew across his goal, limiting the potency of Morocco's crosses.
He also made the first-save in the penalty shootout, but his teammates failed to capitalise on his heroic intervention.
Bright Osayi-Samuel (6.5/10):
Bright Osayi-Samuel had a solid game at the office. He largely kept Abde quiet and then Hamza Igamane. However, tasked with holding with on the right side, he offered little going forward.
Semi Ajayi (5/10):
The Hull City man had a shaky start to the game, making two major errors. However, he soon steadied into proceedings, and made multiple interventions.
However, his poor quality on the ball dampened the effectiveness of Nigeria's build up throughout the encounter.
Calvin Bassey (9/10):
The Fulham man had a monstrous performance, one that should immediately cement his place in the Team of the the Tournament.
He was strong, fast, sharp and incredibly clever. He made multiples defensive interventions and was by far the Super Eagles' standout player. O
Bruno Onyeamachi (7/10):
Bruno Onyeamachi almost single-handedly denied Brahim Diaz's Player of the Tournament claim. The Real Madrid man was a non-factor for the entirety of the encounter, largely due to Bruno's seismic defensive performance.
Raphael Onyedika (5/10):
Much has been made about Raphael Onyedika's readiness to usurp Wilfred Ndidi. Based on the evidence from this game, however, Super Eagles' fans will hope there is not end in sight for the Benfica man's international career.
He was shaky and never really settled into the game. His inferior defensive dependability to Ndidi was also glaring, and he struggled to keep track of what was happening around him.
Frank Onyeka (6/10):
Frank Onyeka has a busy game defensively, but the contest exposed his frailties on the ball. Consequentially, the Super Eagles struggled to advance play through the right side of the pitch partly due to his limitations.
Alex Iwobi (6/10):
Alex Iwobi had an uncharacteristically underwhelming performance. Walid Regragui set up his side expertly to dampen his efficacy, and he struggled to solve the puzzle.
Ademola Lookman (5/10):
Ademola Lookman, like Iwobi, was a victim of Regragui's superior tactics over Eric Chelle. The Atalanta man had passing lanes to him cut off and was swarmed every time he managed to get the ball. He failed to deliver accurate set pieces, impose himself or offer any sort of offensive contribution other than a good shot on target in the first half.
Akor Adams (4.5/10)
Akor Adams had a shocking game, the weakest from any Super Eagles star on the pitch. With the centre of the pick clogged he was forced to find joy out wide. He struggled. He was careless on the ball; made multiple had decisions and simply lasted too long on the pitch.
Victor Osimhen (5/10):
Victor Osimhen, like Nigeria's other two attackers, was barely involved. He managed only 26 touches in 120 minutes, failed to register a single shot, and reacted too slowly to a great chance created by Alex Iwobi.
