What began as an open contest saw both goalkeepers tested early.
Arsenal were inches from the opener when Leandro Trossard’s strike beat Pope but cannoned off the post, while Eberechi Eze also went close from the edge of the area, only to be denied by Sven Botman’s block a fine Nick Pope save.
Having weathered that spell, Newcastle struck in the 35th minute. A short corner from Sandro Tonali was whipped into the box and Nick Woltemade climbed above the falling Gabriel Magalhães to head home.
The Gunners responded by introducing William Saliba for Cristhian Mosquera at half-time and continued to press, with Eze firing over and Jurriën Timber’s header forcing another brilliant stop from Pope.
Mikel Arteta's men finally broke through as Rice’s cross was headed in via the post by Mikel Merino, and deep into stoppage time they completed the turnaround.
Captain Martin Odegaard’s corner was met by Gabriel, whose powerful header sealed a dramatic 2-1 win, sparking wild away celebrations. The result lifts Arsenal within two points of Premier League leaders Liverpool.
