Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino sent a rousing message to Arsenal fans following the successful completion of his foot surgery to fix a fracture. His father also spoke on the injury, and although he sounded gloomy, stressing the rarity of the injury, he maintained a positive outlook.
What the Merinos said
The Spain international shared the update via social media, uploading a picture of himself on a hospital bed, fresh out of the operating room. Despite the unfortunate and obviously painful ordeal, he was all smiles.
He captioned, "Surgery done! Already closer to be back. Thank you so much to everyone for your messages and love. It really gives me even more energy to face the challenge. Vamos!"
Merino’s father provided more details on the injury. While he put a positive spin on his comments, saying it was not the worst injury possible, he spoke candidly, saying that there was no clarity regarding his recovery.
“Despite the problem, he’s accepting the situation. Injuries never come at a good time, and a player has to be prepared for whatever comes,” Miguel Merino said. “It’s tough, but we have to look on the bright side.
“There are much worse injuries than this one. There’s uncertainty because the recovery time isn’t well understood as there’s no history of this type of injury. It’s a stress fracture. It’s not an injury to the toes, it’s a bit more internal. It’s an injury that isn’t very well documented. There are many doubts regarding his recovery.”
Arsenal have managed to cope in Merino’s absence, despite failing to secure a replacement before the transfer window shut down. They have created a six-point gap on the Premier League summit and remain favourites to win the EPL title inspite of Merino’s absence.
