'Massive performance' — Frank Lampard reveals how Onyeka impressed on Coventry debut
Coventry City have surged back to the top of the Championship table following a clinical 3-1 victory over Middlesbrough at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Monday night.
While their return to the top will grab the headlines, the night belonged to two men: hat-trick hero Haji Wright and debutant Frank Onyeka
From a Nigerian perspective, all eyes were on Onyeka. The Super Eagles midfielder was thrust straight into the starting XI for his first appearance since arriving on loan from Brentford in the winter transfer window.
Despite the pressure of a promotion race, Onyeka delivered a commanding performance that anchored the Sky Blues' midfield and allowed Wright the freedom to dismantle the Boro defense.
Lampard hails Onyeka debut for Coventry
Manager Frank Lampard was glowing in his assessment of the newcomer. Speaking to BBC Coventry & Warwickshire post-match, Lampard said:
"Yes, absolutely. It was brilliant. His performance, his power in winning the ball, his quality of understanding when to jump and press, and what he's like in duels, but also his quality of play."
The debut wasn't without its tensions. Only 27 minutes into the contest, Onyeka was cautioned for a late challenge on Aidan Morris.
Lampard, however, felt the midfielder showed veteran composure to navigate the remaining hour on a yellow card.
“It was a massive performance from him, and he gets a booking, it’s never a booking," Lampard insisted.
"I’m thinking, if he tires, is he going to come off? But I thought he dealt with that situation well. An outstanding debut. To come from the Premier League and step up to this level of game so quickly... was a great sign. I am really pleased for him."
