Mamelodi Sundowns to Take Legal Action After Fans Attack Sporting Director
Mamelodi Sundowns have officially condemned the actions of a supporter who threw water at the club's sporting director, Flemming Berg, following a recent match at Loftus Stadium.
The club has confirmed it will pursue legal action to identify and penalise the individual responsible for the incident, which occurred after Mamelodi Sundowns' 2-2 draw against Sudanese club Al Hilal last Friday.
A video circulating on social media shows a fan dousing Flemming Berg with water as the technical team was leaving the pitch. In response, the club released a formal statement addressing the matter.
Mamelodi Sundowns Break Silence on Fan Behaviour
“Mamelodi Sundowns condemns the behaviour and conduct of the few ill-disciplined supporters who were disrupting members of the Sundowns Technical Team as they were leaving the stadium after the Sundowns and Al Hilal match,” Mamelodi Sundowns said in a press release.
“Sundowns has always encouraged active supporter participation and engagement, which must always be done with respect and courtesy.”
Mamelodi Sundowns made its stance clear, warning that any illegal behaviour or intimidation from fans will not be overlooked.
“Mamelodi Sundowns will not tolerate any threats, illegal behaviour or intimidation by any of its supporters or fans at any of its matches. Appropriate legal or disciplinary proceedings will be initiated against those whose conduct is found to be illegal or contrary to the policies or rules of the Sundowns Supporters,” the statement added.
The statement concluded by highlighting the team's focus on their competitive goals, calling for positive backing from their fanbase.
"The Players and Technical Team of Mamelodi Sundowns are focusing on retaining the League Title and successfully competing in all cup competitions. This can only be achieved with the support and encouragement of the Mamelodi Sundowns Supporters."
The stern warning to fans comes as Mamelodi Sundowns prepare to face off against Sekhukhune United on Tuesday, January 27, at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.
