Mamelodi Sundowns Coach Hints at Exit as Pitso Mosimane Comeback Looms
Amid speculation linking legendary coach Pitso Mosimane with a return to Mamelodi Sundowns, current coach Miguel Cardoso looks to have hinted at leaving the club.
Cardoso’s reign seems to be coming to an end following reports in the last two weeks that the club is in talks with former coach Mosimane with a view to replacing him in the hot seat.
That has put Cardoso’s position in the spotlight with his future now a subject of speculation and the Portuguese tactician looks to be alive to what is happening going by his latest social media activities.
The first major hint is Cardoso’s decision to remove the title Mamelodi Sundowns Head Coach from his social media profile with his Instagram account now titled: “Official account of Football Manager, Miguel Cardoso.”
Miguel Cardoso With Cryptic Message
That has been followed up by a cryptic message from Cardoso on his Instagram story. He posted a famous quote from English singer and actor David Bowie which states: "I don't know where I'm going from here, but I promise it won't be boring.”
It adds fuel to the raging fire regarding the coaching situation at Sundowns where it is reported that Mosimane has agreed to return to the club, six years after leaving, with a few issues set to be concluded to clear the path for his second coming.
Mosimane is Sundowns’ most successful coach after guiding them to five league titles and their only CAF Champions League crown won in 2016 during an eight-year spell between 2012 and 2020.
Since his departure, Sundowns elevated his assistants Rulani Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi as co-coaches before the former was made head coach and when he departed in July 2024, the latter was elevated.
Why Portuguese Coach is Under Pressure
However, Mngqithi’s reign as head coach lasted just five months before he was sacked with Cardoso taking over in December 2024, leading Sundowns to their eighth straight league title and the Champions League final, which they lost to Egyptian side Pyramids.
Cardoso has, however, come under pressure this season when Sundowns did not start the campaign as brilliantly as previous seasons, dropping 13 points from as many games, which left them in an unfamiliar second position by the end of 2025 while the style of play has not also impressed fans.
It remains to be seen if the Portuguese has a future at the Pretoria-based club with league matches set to resume on January 19.
