Following news that Pitso Mosimane is in talks with Mamelodi Sundowns over the possibility of returning to the club, it has been revealed that the two parties have been working to resolve their differences behind the scenes.

Mosimane is reported to have had discussions with his former club with regards to returning six years after leaving a club that he delivered plenty of success to.

The 61-year-old is considered Sundowns’ most successful coach after winning five league titles and delivering their only CAF Champions League crown in an eight-year stint that also saw him win a number of cup competitions.

However, when he left Sundowns for Egyptian giants Al Ahly in 2020, there was a financial dispute that had to be settled by a court and in August 2025, Mosimane lost a case seeking to have him pay close to R8 million (Ksh62 million) to the club.

Mosimane and Sundowns Resolving Dispute

The court ordered Mosimane to pay R7,912,905 (Ksh61.7 million) in agent commission fees, plus 7% annual interest calculated from May 10, 2021, until the payment is settled after Sundowns initiated the case to reclaim a portion of the agent’s commission paid to MT Sports, the tactician’s management company, after he departed for Al Ahly in 2020, just four months into a new four-year contract with the South African giants.

Such a dispute would have made it difficult for the two parties to work together again but according to KickOff, Mosimane and Sundowns have been working to resolve the issue which is now paving the way for a potential reunion.

“In a dramatic turn of events, breaking news coming out of Tshwane is that Mosimane and Masandawana are looking at putting their recent past behind them and mending the fractured relationship,” the outlet reported.

“All indications are that the two parties will shake hands and pave the way for future opportunities. And with signs pointing to a mended relationship, it would open the door for a potential return to Sundowns for Mosimane in the future, should the opportunity present itself.”

Will Veteran Coach Return to Downs?

Another South African outlet SoccerBeat reported this week that Mosimane and Sundowns have been actively working behind the scenes over a reunion either this season or next term with the position of current coach Miguel Cardoso shaky.

Cardoso has overseen a less than impressive start to the season with 13 points dropped from their first 13 league games, ending the year in second place, two points behind Orlando Pirates, an unusual position for Sundowns at this point in the season.

“Cardoso won the league, but he had already been given a good start by our local guys. So, we don't see, and from the news I'm receiving, I don't see Cardoso finishing the season. If he does, I'm pretty certain it is his last season,” said SoccerBeat’s Peter du Toit.

“But Pitso Mosimane, I've been told by sources very, very close to it, sources in the club, that Pitso Mosimane may well be at Mamelodi Sundowns sooner than you think. Now, what I've also done is left a message with Pitso Mosimane’s agent, and hopefully I'll get some kind of feedback from her shortly.”
