SoccerBeat has reported that, according to sources close to the situation, talks are ongoing and a final decision is likely to be reached before the Africa Cup of Nations comes to an end.

Pitso Mosimane remains unattached in early 2026, having spent much of the past year concentrating on his youth football foundation following his departure from Iranian club Esteghlal FC.

Despite being a free agent, the highly decorated coach continues to be strongly linked with possible comebacks to South African heavyweights such as Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.

SoccerBeat founder and presenter Peter du Toit has revealed that there are growing indications from within the team’s inner circles suggesting a possible return of Pitso Mosimane to Mamelodi Sundowns in the near future.

He explained that this belief has been shaped by patterns seen in the club’s recent history, noting that the current coach, Miguel Cardoso, has rarely remained at one institution for an extended period.

From the Pretoria-based side’s perspective, he argued that domestic dominance alone is no longer enough to guarantee job security, pointing out that even an impressive league run in the past failed to protect a previous coach from dismissal.

In his view, Mamelodi Sundowns’ standards are so high that consistency, longevity, and continental ambition ultimately carry more weight than local success alone.

“This is going to sound unbelievable, but I've heard strong, strong talk from within the club's camp that Pitso Mosimane will be back at Mamelodi Sundowns sooner than you think. That deal could happen by the time the AFCON ends,” he said.

“Pitso could be back at Mamelodi Sundowns. Now, a couple of reasons. Let's look backwards. If you look at Cardoso, he's never spent more than two years at any one particular club.

“But if you look at it from a Sundowns point of view, winning the League of Sundowns is not an outstanding achievement. Rulani was unbeaten until the very last game of the season, and he lost his job.”

He further suggested that although Miguel Cardoso guided the team to the league title, the foundation for that success had largely been laid by previous local coaches, which, in his view, reduced the significance of the achievement.

Based on information he claimed to be receiving, he indicated that the Portuguese tactician was unlikely to see out the campaign and that even if he did, his tenure would probably not extend beyond the current season.

He went on to state that reliable insiders within the club were increasingly pointing towards an imminent return of Pitso Mosimane, sooner than many might expect.

“Cardoso won the league, but he had already been given a good start by our local guys. So, we don't see, and from the news I'm receiving, I don't see Cardoso finishing the season. If he does, I'm pretty certain it is his last season,” he added.

“But Pitso Mosimane, I've been told by sources very, very close to it, sources in the club, that Pitso Mosimane may well be at Mamelodi Sundowns sooner than you think. Now, what I've also done is left a message with Pitso Mosimane’s agent, and hopefully I'll get some kind of feedback from her shortly.”
