'Madrid must evaluate if Vinícius is worth keeping' - Ex-sporting director questions Brazilian's attitude
Criticism continues to mount over Vinícius Júnior's attitude at the Carlos Tartiere stadium during Real Madrid's 3-0 victory over Oviedo.
At issue, once again, were his gestures towards the referee and the stands, including holding up two fingers to the home fans, seemingly alluding to their potential relegation to the second division.
This behavior overshadowed his actual contribution to the game: an assist and a goal in just half an hour after coming on in the 63rd minute.
During the celebration of Kylian Mbappé's goal, which Vinícius assisted for the 2-0, the Frenchman even placed a hand over his teammate's mouth in an attempt to calm him down. However, this did little to stop Vinícius, who continued to make defiant gestures towards the crowd and the match referee, De Burgos Bengoetxea.
What Vinicius did
On social media, Vinícius doubled down on his stance, responding to the criticism with a brief yet provocative message. "This is who I am," he wrote, accompanying the post with an image of himself confronting the crowd.
Former player and sporting director, Pedja Mijatovic, is now questioning whether the player is worth keeping.
"Some things never change. It's not worth it. For me, that behaviour is not fitting for a Real Madrid shirt. He needs to motivate himself by competing with humility. He's an excellent player, but you have to evaluate if it's worth having him," he said on the program El Larguero, via Abola.
Mijatovic also commented on coach Xabi Alonso's selections, who opted to start Rodrygo over Vinícius for this match:
"The competition between Vini and Rodrygo can be a good thing, but it can also create problems for the coach. For now, Rodrygo is in the lineup, and it's a good strategy from Xabi to keep everyone happy and motivated. Vini had his guaranteed spot with Ancelotti, but Xabi doesn't care about that."
