In the 83rd minute, Szoboszlai stepped up over a free kick from distance, surprising both the visitors and the crowd by going for goal rather than playing short. The strike flew past Raya, who failed to react in time, sealing an important win in front of a jubilant home crowd.
Szoboszlai’s Explanation
After the match, the 23-year-old explained the thinking behind his decision to shoot from such an ambitious position.
“I had to take a risk and shoot a little bit harder because I know Raya likes to jump behind the wall, and, of course, he’s an unbelievable goalkeeper. So if I think it goes a little bit more inside, he saves it,” he said.
Szoboszlai admitted the attempt was not one he had been working on in training. “This shot I did not practise in the past few weeks because we were shooting from closer and this was a different shot … but I had to take a chance.”
Raya’s Response and Liverpool’s Rise
He also acknowledged the role of teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold in set-piece duties: “Trent was taking the free kicks because, obviously, he has an unbelievable shot. But finally I could have my chance and yeah, I did it.”
Arsenal goalkeeper Raya later reflected on the difficulty of dealing with the new Premier League match ball, which he suggested moves unpredictably in the air.
However, the Spaniard conceded that Szoboszlai’s effort was struck with precision and pace, leaving him with little chance.
The victory marked Liverpool’s third in succession and reinforced their credentials as early title contenders. Szoboszlai’s strike not only highlighted his technical ability but also his growing influence in Klopp’s side. For Liverpool, it was a vital result against a direct rival, while for Szoboszlai, it was a moment that underlined why the club invested so heavily in him.
As the Anfield crowd roared in celebration, the Hungarian’s bold decision had delivered maximum points and a memorable goal that could resonate throughout the season.
