Legendary coach reveals only way Djokovic can win US Open
Novak Djokovic hasn't played a competitive match in almost two months, since the Wimbledon semi-finals, and only recently began his US Open preparations.
While many question whether skipping the tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati was a mistake, coach Rick Macci believes the "greatest of all time" should never be counted out.
"Djokovic can win the US Open, but the conditions must be ideal. A lot will depend on the draw; if he has to play many matches against tough opponents, like Sinner and Alcaraz, it will be very difficult. The chance is there, but he can't afford to play four or five-hour matches early in the tournament," says Macci.
The former coach of the Williams sisters and other great champions points out that the potential problems aren't with Djokovic's game or level of tennis, but with the physical and mental strain.
"I think the physical and mental demands of the US Open will be too much for him," Macci adds.
Is Novak injured?
The world's top-ranked tennis player has confirmed his participation in the US Open, but footage from a training session suggests he might be dealing with an injury.
The video shows his trainer massaging his groin, after which a grimace of pain is visible on Novak's face. His tentative movements and the fact that he isn't putting full weight on the injured leg are particularly concerning. For now, there's no official information about the nature or severity of the injury. However, Djokovic is still expected to compete at the US Open, scheduled for August 18th to September 8th.
