Chelsea legend John Terry has rejected a claim that he was not qualified to fill the recently vacated head coach position at the club, listing his credentials and job experience.
The Blues entered a search for a new manager after the abrupt exit of Enzo Maresca following a breakdown in the relationship between the Italian tactician and the club’s hierarchy. Terry’s name was floated as a possible replacement, and when one fan attempted to question his qualifications, he set the record straight.
What Terry said
The fan, with the Instagram handle @paigejordan93, said, “Terry isn’t qualified” in a post that appeared to name the former Chelsea captain as a candidate for the head coach position.
Terry responded, saying, “I have every qualification going; I have 3 years of coaching experience in the Premier League with Aston Villa.”
“On top of that, nobody is more Chelsea than me. For us to be top again, we need a top manager, as yes, that would rule me out, but please don't say I'm underqualified!”
John Terry’s coaching career
Terry began his formal coaching pathway soon after retiring as a player. In October 2018, he was appointed assistant head coach at Aston Villa alongside head coach Dean Smith, a role he held through Villa’s successful 2018–19 promotion campaign and until his departure from the club in July 2021.
After leaving Villa, Terry accepted a part-time academy coaching/consultancy role with Chelsea, and in April 2023, he briefly rejoined Dean Smith as part of the first-team coaching staff at Leicester City for the remainder of that season.
Less than a month after the end of that spell, he confirmed a return to work with Chelsea’s academy in July 2023 and has been working with Chelsea’s youth set-up since. He has since been on the lookout for a first-team head coach role, the absence of which has left him frustrated.
