'I'm NOT the problem' - Lionel Messi's bodyguard fires back after being BANNED from protecting him during MLS games
Lionel Messi’s trusted bodyguard, Yassine Cheuko, has broken his silence after being banned from stepping onto the pitch during MLS games.
The former Navy SEAL, who has been Messi’s personal security detail since the his move to the United States in 2023, insists that he is not the issue.
Yassine Cheuko: Messi’s bodyguard reveals suggests there are bigger problems after being banned from protecting Inter Miami star
Cheuko has become a familiar figure at Inter Miami matches, often seen sprinting down the sidelines to thwart pitch invaders eager to get close to the Argentine superstar.
His presence became necessary after Messi’s arrival in MLS caused a surge in fan enthusiasm, sometimes leading to dangerous situations.
However, MLS has now imposed restrictions on Cheuko, limiting his role to behind-the-scenes security.
He revealed in an interview with House of Highlights: “They don't allow me to be on the field anymore.”
Despite this decision, Cheuko is adamant that the real issue lies with the league’s security measures, not his involvement.
Addressing the challenges MLS faces with Messi on board, Cheuko compared his experience in Europe to what he has seen in the United States.
‘I was in Europe for seven years working for Ligue 1 and the Champions League, and only six people invaded the pitch.
'I arrived in the United States, and in 20 months of work, 16 people have already invaded the pitch. There's a huge problem here. I'm not the problem. Let me help Messi,’ he stated as per the aforementioned outlet.
However, Chueko expressed his willingness to collaborate with the league despite the new stipulation:
'I love MLS and CONCACAF, but we have to work together. I love helping. I'm not better than anyone, but I have a wealth of experience in Europe. It's fine, I understand their decision, but I think we could do better.”
Despite being sidelined during matches, Cheuko remains a crucial part of Messi’s security team, providing round-the-clock protection for the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner and his family.
