Messi vs Ronaldo: Ex-LALIGA Golden Boot winner provides perspective to GOAT debate
Former Italy international Christian Vieri has definitively crowned Lionel Messi as football's greatest player of all time over Cristiano Ronaldo during a recent podcast appearance.
The former Inter Milan striker declared his preference for the Argentine forward during an interview on The Late Run podcast hosted by Chad Ochocinco.
Vieri crowns Messi
Vieri acknowledged Ronaldo’s historic achievements, noting the 41-year-old’s accumulation of over 900 career goals, his five Ballon d'Or awards, and his successful tenure at Real Madrid.
However, the Italian insisted that Messi's overall footballing profile places him definitively above his Portuguese counterpart.
"Messi for me is the number one all time," Vieri stated to Ochocinco.

A disappointing World Cup cameo
Vieri detailed that his current evaluation was influenced by attending the 2026 FIFA World Cup as a FIFA representative.
He requested to specifically watch Ronaldo during Portugal’s Round of 16 encounter against eventual tournament champions Spain at AT&T Stadium on July 6, 2026.
Spain secured a 1-0 victory following a 90th-minute stoppage-time winner from Mikel Merino, while Ronaldo remained on the pitch for the entire fixture.
Vieri expressed frustration with the Portuguese forward's performance, arguing that he is no longer capable of dictating matches over a full 90 minutes.
"I was very disappointed because I don't think—and I have a lot of love for him, a lot of respect, yes—but he shouldn't have been playing the whole 90 minutes," Vieri explained.
The never-ending debate
Ochocinco immediately pushed back against Vieri's assessment, arguing that Ronaldo now plays a dependent position and was let down by an underperforming Portuguese midfield during the tournament.
Despite his defence of the Portuguese forward, the host conceded that almost every guest on his programme overwhelmingly selects Messi over Ronaldo.
Vieri speaks from a privileged position, having previously claimed the Serie A top scorer award with Inter Milan during the 2002/03 season.
He also claimed the LALIGA top scorer crown with Atlético Madrid during the 1997/98 campaign and eventually won the 2004/05 Coppa Italia with Inter, alongside registering 23 goals in 49 appearances for the Italian national team.
