‘I Spoke a Lot With Coach Pitso’ - High-Flying Tactician Reveals Mosimane’s Big Impact on His Career

Veteran South African coach Pitso Mosimane’s influence on football in his country and the continent has been immense and a highly-rated tactician has opened up about how he shaped his career.

Mosimane, one of the greats when it comes to coaching in Africa, has worked with several players and also nurtured a number of coaches with Rulani Mokwena being among them, having given him a chance at Mamelodi Sundowns.

The 61-year-old enjoyed a trophy-laden eight years at Sundowns, having spent six at SuperSport United, before moving to Egyptian giants Al Ahly and later in the Middle East.

Now, Polokwane City coach Phuti Mohafe has disclosed how Mosimane was among a number of experienced tacticians who aided his own coaching career that has seen him become one of the highly-rated tacticians in South Africa.

Mosimane’s Influence Lauded

Mohafe has made Polokwane City a consistently top eight team in South Africa and is now the longest-serving coach in the Premier Soccer League following the departure of Steve Barker to Simba SC of Tanzania.

“I spoke a lot with the coach Pitso while he was at [Mamelodi] Sundowns,” Mohafe told #PrimeSportsWithMahlatse when naming those who have had a massive influence on his career.

“I’m speaking a lot with coach Manqoba [Mngqithi] I’m speaking a lot with coach Mandla Ncikazi, and I spoke a lot with the coach Steve Komphela. So those are the guys who have paved this coaching career with me, and I also speak with two coaches, Steve Barker and the coach Gavin [Hunt], when I meet them.”

Mohafe Reveals Big Ambitions

Mohafe says the words of wisdom received from the veterans in the game have helped him become a shining light when it comes to coaching in South Africa and he remains keen on conquering Africa.

“So, they are so encouraging, and they ascertain me that if I put my head between the shoulders, then I will become the next big thing. So, I didn’t take that and raise my head and say I’ve arrived. I just take that as a word of encouragement and I thank them for doing that, because they’ve done that,” he added.

“They’ve seen that and they just want us to walk the same journey as they walk, but better than what they have done previously.”
