McCarthy has already handled Cape Town City and AmaZulu back home in South Africa, both as head coach, and had a successful spell at both clubs, before working as attacking coach at Premier League club Manchester United.

One of those who came up against him during his stint in South Africa is ex-Gor Mahia coach Dylan Kerr, who has worked at clubs like Black Leopards, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila [TTM], Baroka FC, the now-defunct Moroka Swallows.

It was during his stint at Black Leopards when Kerr experienced the other side of McCarthy as his side took on Cape Town City in the final match of the 2018-19 season, needing a win to survive relegation.

What Makes Benni McCarthy Standout

McCarthy had made it clear there would be no favours from his side but Kerr’s team secured a 1-0 win to retain their top flight status.

“I remember Benni McCarthy, we played Cape Town City the last game, we needed a point, we needed to win. And Benni being Benni comes out and says; ‘I am not doing any favours, I want the three points’,” Kerr said on SoccerBeat.

“It was good because I do not want him to do me favours, I would never ask you to do me a favour. I said I want to win this game myself and we won 1-0 and Benni didn’t even congratulate me after the game.

“He just stomped off because Benni is Benni, he is a funny character,” added Kerr, who won the 2018 Kenyan Premier League title with Gor Mahia.
