He will not win it — Figo explains why Real Madrid star will miss out on Ballon d'Or
Former Real Madrid and Barcelona midfielder Luis Figo has explained why he believes Kylian Mbappe is unlikely to win the 2025 Ballon d’Or.
Despite Mbappe’s individual success in his debut season at Real Madrid, the club fell short of securing major trophies, enduring a disappointing UEFA Champions League exit at the hands of Arsenal.
Luis Figo on 2025 Ballon d'Or debate
Figo, a former Ballon d’Or winner, emphasized that Mbappe’s lack of team silverware could hinder his chances for the prestigious award.
Speaking to AS, Figo commented on the France captain’s prospects:
“Things weren’t so great at first, but he’s done well since then. He’s scored a lot of goals and has adapted to playing for Real Madrid, which is totally different from playing for any other team.
“What could rule him out for individual trophies is his lack of major team titles, but we’ll see what happens."
The 26-year-old scored 43 goals in his debut season and is expected to play a part for Los Blancos in the knockout rounds of the Club World Cup.
However, there appears to be very little chance of him winning the award, as the likes of Ousmane Dembele and Barcelona duo Lamine Yamal and Raphinha are the favourites.
