He was rejected by England — Ex-Super Eagles coach explains why Lookman is forcing Inter move
Former Super Eagles head coach Jose Peseiro attempted to explain why Ademola Lookman is insistent on joining Inter, suggesting that it had something to do with his national team career.
The 27-year-old is currently on strike, as he is attempting to force a move to the Nerazzurri, after Atalanta rejected two bids from Inter. The Nigerian has been largely criticised for the drastic step he took, but Peseiro, in a recent interview, rationalised it.
What Peseiro said
Lookman played through various age groups in the England youth set-up, and was a highly-rated talent. However, he failed to get the Three Lions call-up after waiting for years.
He eventually chose Nigeria, and Peseiro, who coached him at the Super Eagles, believes that rejection by England is a contributing factor to Lookman's desire to prove himself at a top club, hence why he is forcing the move to Inter.
"As a kid in England, he was destined for the top spot,” Peseiro told Gazzetta.it. “He grew up hearing people say he'd become a Premier League star, even becoming an under-20 World Cup winner.
“Then he wasn't called up again, and as a result, he chose the Nigerian national team, a team he's very attached to because he adores his parents.
“To understand who Ademola is, you have to focus on this moment: he suffered a harsh rejection, it was a moment of pain and anguish. His desire for redemption was born there; now he wants to prove he's a top-tier European player like Inter. And for me, he is 100%."
Peseiro was then asked about the price tag Atalanta are demanding and if he agreed that it was exorbitant for a player close to 30. The Portuguese coach believes it to be adequate, citing Lookman's quality.
"The price reflects his enormous quality and his ability to adapt to the playing style. Age doesn't matter: Inter want to win immediately; they're not thinking about selling him."
