'He was one of my best players at the club' - Rinsola explains Jota's celebration.
Super Falcons forward Omorinsola Babajide has opened up about the emotional inspiration behind her goal celebration in Nigeria’s commanding 3-0 victory over Tunisia at the ongoing 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Babajide scored her first international goal for the Super Falcons during the match at the Labri Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday night, netting the team’s second goal in the 45th minute to cap off a dominant first-half performance.
What Rinsola said
Speaking after the game, the 26-year-old revealed that her celebration was a heartfelt tribute to the late Diogo Jota, the Liverpool and Portugal forward who tragically passed away in a car accident in Spain last week, along with his brother.
“It was for Diogo Jota and his brother as well. That was like one of his biggest celebrations at the club especially. We call it the signature celebration really.
“I just wanted to do something for him. He was one of my best players at the club when I was there as well. May his soul rest in perfect peace, both of them,” Babajide said.

Babajide, who spent four years with Liverpool Ladies before moving to Brighton & Hove Albion, shared a close connection with Jota during her time at the club.
Her tribute was warmly received by fans and teammates, adding a personal and poignant layer to her landmark goal.
The Super Falcons' victory puts them in a strong position in Group B, as they aim to reclaim their crown and win a historic 10th WAFCON title.
Babajide and the rest of the squad will look to build on this powerful start, with their next match set against Botswana on July 10.
