He is my idol: Chelsea midfielder Fernandez names ex-Man City star as biggest inspiration
Enzo Fernandez has revealed his deep admiration for club legend Frank Lampard, calling the former captain an "idol" and "inspiration."
The Argentina international, who has enjoyed a prolific season with 11 goals in all competitions, admitted he is actively studying videos of Lampard to improve his own game.
Lampard's extraordinary achievements include being Chelsea's all-time top scorer and winning multiple Premier League titles, FA Cups, League Cups, and the Champions League with the club, and across a short spell at Manchester City.
Enzo Fernandez hails Chelsea legend Frank Lampard
Specifically, Fernandez has been analysing Lampard’s legendary ability to arrive late in the box, and looking to perfect that side of his own game.
"He's an inspiration," Fernandez told Sky Sports.
"I've watched a lot of videos of Frank since coming to Chelsea. I've seen how he got into those last meters of the pitch and into the box.
"He was an exceptional player and a legend. I don't like to be compared to him because he achieved so much more. He's an idol; I hope to follow in his footsteps."
Fernandez also reflected on his progress under manager Liam Rosenior, describing this as his best year since joining in 2023.
Having already surpassed 150 appearances for the Blues, the World Cup winner is finding his best form in a more advanced role, coincidentally matching Lampard's tally of 27 goals at the same stage of his Chelsea career.
Fans will hope Fernandez can continue to channel that "Lampard magic" as the Blues push for silverware and a top-four finish in 2026.
