Hansi Flick saved my career — Raphinha pays tribute to Barcelona boss

Raphinha has revealed he was on the verge of leaving the club before a crucial intervention from manager Hansi Flick.

The 29-year-old admitted he had "one foot out of the club" prior to Flick's arrival in 2024. He credits the German coach for his remarkable transformation, which has established him as one of the world's elite players.

Raphinha's elevated status was on full display in Sunday's thrilling 3-2 Super Cup final victory against arch-rivals Real Madrid, where he was instrumental for the Catalans, opening the scoring in the first half and later netting the decisive winner with a deflected strike.

This dynamic performance has become a hallmark of Raphinha's role in Flick's treble-winning side, a stark contrast to his first two seasons in Spain.

After joining from Leeds United in 2022 under Xavi Hernández, the Brazil international struggled to consistently make his mark.

"[Flick] was the person that changed everything for me here," Raphinha explained after securing his second consecutive Super Cup title.

"I had one foot out of the club when he was appointed. The importance of him speaking with me, telling me I would be important... that’s what you need, someone who values your work.

"He gave me what I needed in that moment, which allowed me to focus on working hard and giving my best for the team."

Under Flick's system, Raphinha has thrived on the left wing, a tactical shift that accommodates both Yamal and the attacking runs of left-back Alejandro Balde.

Since the German's appointment, no Barcelona player has matched Raphinha's combined total of 75 goals and assists across all competitions.

Raphinha missed out on last season's Ballon d'Or, but was crowned LaLiga player of the season for the 2024-25 season.
