Haaland's father makes fresh statement on son's future after abysmal season

Erling Haaland’s father, Alf Inge Haaland, recently spoke on his son's future as Manchester City prepare to face Al Ain in the Club World Cup. 

The 24-year-old joined the Cityzens in the summer of 2022 from Dortmund; however, there was a reported release clause worked into his contract, leading to exit rumours. 

Those rumours were put to bed earlier this year when he signed until 2034. However, after the abysmal season, in which they finished trophyless, Haaland described the campaign as boring, suggesting unhappiness. 

The former Leeds defender told reporters in the US that his son's head is in the right place and he is happy at the Etihad. 

“He (Erling Haaland) is happy,” the older Haaland said, per Marca. “Now he's focused and focused on the Club World Cup and... yes, he's happy.”

Manchester City are currently competing in the Club World Cup, and Haaland was a substitute in the 2-0 victory over Wydad. His father tipped City to win. 

"I think they are the favourites to win this tournament. We're seeing some good games. Yes, I think they're among the favourites."

Meanwhile, Chelsea legend John Mikel Obi has been critical of Haaland's performances in big games. For Mikel, the former Dortmund star does not affect high-stakes matches enough, citing that as the difference between him and the Messi-Ronaldo duo.
