Guardiola calls on Man City players to share goalscoring burden
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has urged his squad to stop relying solely on Erling Haaland for goals, calling on his attacking players to be more clinical in front of goal.
The call to action came after City's 2-0 Premier League victory over Everton on Saturday, where the Norwegian striker scored both goals to secure the win.
What Guardiola said
Speaking to the club’s official website after the match, Guardiola highlighted several missed opportunities from other players as a point of concern.
He stressed that for the team to succeed, the responsibility for scoring must be shared.
"He could have scored four or five at the end. He’s our key man," Guardiola said of Haaland.
He added, "At the same time, we cannot do good things with just Erling. Our wingers, attacking midfielders and the other players have to make a step up."
The manager pointed to specific chances that went begging during the game, emphasising the need for his players to convert clear-cut opportunities.
"The chances we create are so clear. They have to score goals. Savinho had two chances, Jeremy had two, Tijjani had another one, and they have to score at that level," he explained.
He added, "We have to score more. If we don’’t create, it’s fine, but when we create, we have to score. They know it."
Despite the recent profligacy, Guardiola remains confident in the goalscoring abilities of his squad, noting their quality in training sessions.
"I don’t have doubts that when it is unlocked, players will score. Omar is a top scorer, Savio, Oscar, Tijji and Phil are so good at scoring goals in those positions... We have Erling, so it’s fine, but we will be stronger. I want our team to be strong and this is what they have to do," he added.
