FIFA Ranking: Nigeria moves 12 places to 26th in the world, ranks above Algeria, Ghana, South Africa
The recently concluded AFCON 2025 has caused a seismic shift in the January 2026 FIFA/Coca-Cola Men’s World Ranking. The Super Eagles of Nigeria have emerged as one of the biggest beneficiaries, climbing an impressive 12 spots to occupy the 26th position in the world.
This remarkable surge follows an inspiring tournament run where Nigeria secured the bronze medal after a hard-fought victory over Egypt.
The move sees Nigeria leapfrog continental rivals such as Algeria, Ghana, and South Africa, firmly establishing the Super Eagles as the third-best team in Africa.
Milestone achievement for AFCON finalists
While Nigeria recorded the most significant jump among the top-tier teams, the two finalists also reached monumental landmarks in their footballing history:
Morocco (8th, up 3): Despite the heartbreak of losing the final on home soil, the Atlas Lions have broken into the global top 10 for the first time since 1998. Reaching the 8th position marks their best-ever FIFA ranking.
Senegal (12th, up 7): The newly crowned African champions have scaled unprecedented heights. By reclaiming the continental throne, the Teranga Lions have jumped to 12th in the world, their highest standing in history.
The updated rankings confirm a new "Big Three" in African football, with Senegal and Morocco leading the pack, followed closely by a resurgent Nigeria.
Cameroon also mirrored Nigeria’s progress, moving up 12 places after a strong showing that saw them reach the quarterfinals.
At the very top of the global ladder, the status quo remains unchanged. Spain continues to hold the number one spot, followed by world champions Argentina in second and France in third.
Rainbow nation South Africa sits 60th in the world while Ghana's Black Stars are the 72nd best team.
