Head injury, a goal ruled out, a walkout in protest, a shoddy panenka attempt, a screamer – everything happened in the AFCON 2025 final.

An incredible goal from Pape Gueye decided the eventful AFCON 2025 final between Senegal and Morocco, with the Teranga Lions claiming glory in extra time.

The match was an incredible contest between two equally matched sides before it was thrown into controversy.

Pape Thiaw's side scored late in the game, but it was ruled out due to a foul in the buildup. Moments later, Morocco were handed a penalty, a chance to end their AFCON drought with potentially the last kick of the game.

Aggrieved, Senegal players staged a walkout, but Sadio Mané showed exemplary leadership, urging his players back on the pitch. The decision proved the right one, as Eduard Mendy saved Brahim Diaz's ill-advised panenka attempt before Gueye's thunderous winner in extra time.

Key match details

The match began as a cagey tactical battle. Both sides probed in the opening stages, but chances were at a premium as melee rhythm and defensive discipline kept the score level through regulation.

Morocco’s goalkeeper, Yassine Bounou, made several key saves to deny Senegal’s openings in the first half, including a one-on-one stop from Iliman Ndiaye.

The Atlas Lions were much improved in the second half, generating chances through their wide men, but the Senegalese backline remained resolute.

As the final minutes of normal time ticked away, the drama intensified. A late Senegal goal was ruled out after a foul in the build-up, and a VAR review awarded Morocco a controversial penalty deep into stoppage time.

Thiaw, incensed by the decision, asked his players to walk off. However, cooler heads prevailed, with Mane showing professionalism by urging his teammates to return.

Brahim Díaz stepped up to take the spot-kick, but his Panenka attempt was comfortably saved by Edouard Mendy, keeping the contest goalless at the end of 90 minutes

With extra time underway and tension peaking, Senegal found their breakthrough in the 94th minute. Pape Gueye danced past defenders before unleashing a powerful left-footed strike from the edge of the box that beat Bounou and nestled into the top corner.

The closing stages saw Morocco push forward relentlessly in search of a leveller, with Nayef Aguerd crashing a header off the crossbar and Achraf Hakimi delivering dangerous balls into the box, but Senegal’s defence held firm.
