Gasperini dumps Super Eagles star Lookman after shock exit to Serie A rivals

In a significant shake-up in Serie A, Gian Piero Gasperini has officially left Atalanta after nine successful years to take over as the new head coach of AS Roma. 

This managerial change leaves Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman, the reigning African Player of the Year, without his long-time coach as he embarks on a new chapter with the Italian capital club.

Gasperini, 67, signed a three-year contract with Roma, extending through the 2027-28 season, following his departure from Atalanta at the end of the 2024-25 campaign. 

His tenure at Atalanta was marked by remarkable achievements, including transforming the club into a consistent Serie A top contender and European competitor. 

The pinnacle of his success came in 2024 when he led Atalanta to their first-ever major European trophy by winning the UEFA Europa League.

Known for his innovative tactics, emphasis on hard work, and exceptional player development, Gasperini’s coaching style has earned him widespread respect. 

His ability to nurture talents like Lookman helped Atalanta flourish domestically and in Europe. 

However, with Gasperini’s move to Roma, Lookman now faces the challenge of adapting to a new managerial system under a coach he has yet to work with.

Roma’s ownership and outgoing coach Claudio Ranieri, who guided the club to a Europa League qualification last season, have expressed full confidence in Gasperini’s appointment. 

The club aims to return to the UEFA Champions League, a feat they have not achieved since 2019, and Gasperini’s arrival is seen as decisive to this ambition.

For Lookman, the transition signals a critical period as he adjusts to life in Bergamo, seeking to maintain his impressive form without the guidance of the coach who played a key role in his development.
