Russia vs Nigeria: Super Eagles boss Chelle reveals why Osimhen, Lookman and three others are out
Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has provided clarity on the absence of some of Nigeria’s top talents, including Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, from the current squad assembled for the friendly match in Russia.
The omissions have sparked curiosity and concern among fans and analysts, but Chelle’s recent comments shed light on the reasons behind these decisions.
Speaking in a video on Instagram, Chelle praised the quality of both Osimhen and Lookman, describing them as “great players with good technique and intelligence.”
However, he explained that the timing of the season’s end and the players’ personal club futures have influenced their availability.
“[Victor] Osimhen and [Ademola] Lookman are great players with good technique and intelligence,” Chelle stated.
“But the season is over nd they are at the time they have to decide their future at club level. And that’s why they are not here (in Russia) with the team.”,” Chelle said.
This suggests that both players are currently focused on transfer negotiations or contract decisions, which has prevented their participation with the national team at this time.
Chelle also addressed the absence of three other notable players. Nathan Tella is missing due to passport and visa complications, which have delayed his ability to travel and join the squad.
Samuel Chukwueze is dealing with personal family matters that require his attention, making him unavailable for selection.
Meanwhile, Wilfred Ndidi sustained a groin injury during the recent Unity Cup, ruling him out of the upcoming fixtures as he undergoes recovery.
The coach’s explanation stresses the complex factors that can affect player availability beyond just form or fitness.
While the Super Eagles will miss the firepower and experience of these stars, Chelle remains focused on building a cohesive and competitive team with the players currently at his disposal.
