Djokovic celebrates as Bosnia and Herzegovina stun Italy in World Cup playoff final

The Serbian tennis icon made a notable appearance at the Bilino Polje Stadium, becoming a focal point for fans during the match. 

Known for his love of football and strong ties to the Balkan region, Djokovic was filmed enthusiastically celebrating with local supporters. 

As Bosnia and Herzegovina triumphed 4-1 on penalties, footage showed Djokovic smiling, clapping, and embracing fellow spectators.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion was among the jubilant home crowd in Zenica as the four-time world champions were eliminated, marking an unprecedented failure for the Azzurri.

Italy's campaign to avoid a third consecutive World Cup absence began promisingly, with Moise Kean finding the net just 15 minutes into the match. 

However, their fortunes turned when defender Alessandro Bastoni received a red card in the 41st minute, leaving them with ten men. 

The home side capitalised on their advantage late in the game, as Haris Tabakovic scored a 79th-minute equaliser to send the match into extra time.

With no further goals, the tie was decided by a penalty shootout. Bosnia and Herzegovina held their nerve, converting four spot kicks, while Italy faltered, managing to score only one. 

The devastating loss means Italy will miss the 2026 World Cup, a historic low for the footballing powerhouse.
