The 24-time Grand Slam champion was among the jubilant home crowd in Zenica as the four-time world champions were eliminated, marking an unprecedented failure for the Azzurri.

Italy's campaign to avoid a third consecutive World Cup absence began promisingly, with Moise Kean finding the net just 15 minutes into the match.

However, their fortunes turned when defender Alessandro Bastoni received a red card in the 41st minute, leaving them with ten men. 

The home side capitalised on their advantage late in the game, as Haris Tabakovic scored a 79th-minute equaliser to send the match into extra time.

With no further goals, the tie was decided by a penalty shootout. Bosnia and Herzegovina held their nerve, converting four spot kicks, while Italy faltered, managing to score only one.
