His father, Boris, hails from Aruba, while his mother, Marleen, is of Surinamese descent and has a rich multicultural heritage that has undoubtedly shaped his identity.

His parents chose the name Denzel in honour of the acclaimed American actor Denzel Washington. 

Dumfries’s formative years in football saw him develop through the youth ranks of local clubs Smitshoek (2002–2013) and BVV Barendrecht (2013–2014).
