The match in brief

Betis started strongly, scoring the opening goal after Cedric Bakambu squared the ball for Abde Ezzalzouli to tap in. The Moroccan's shot hit the underside of the bar, but Michael Oliver confirmed the goal.

Antony seemed to put Betis in control in the second half with a magnificent drive into the top corner, a stunning strike with his weak foot.

However, Pablo Fornals' tame finish proved costly, and Fiorentina grabbed a lifeline when Luca Ranieri fired home from Gosens' pullback. The result sets up a thrilling second leg in Florence.

What De Gea said

Antony’s goal should immediately enter consideration for one of the best in the tournament, and it highlighted the evolution of his weak foot.

The Brazilian is infamous for having an incompetent right foot but has now scored two brilliant goals with his right leg in less than two weeks.

A gobsmacked De Gea expressed his shock after the match, stating that in all of his time training together with the former Ajax winger, he never saw him do that.

"I trained with Antony 1,000 times and he never scored a goal with his right foot in any training session,” De Gea said.

“I'm happy for him because he was coming from a difficult moment at United and now he's showing the best of himself.”
