Anthony Joshua returns to UK after a fatal Nigerian car crash killed two friends
The unfortunate incident took place almost immediately after the group arrived in Nigeria, where they had travelled to spend a holiday.
Reports have emerged that Joshua narrowly avoided more serious injury after a last-minute decision to switch seats in the Lexus SUV.
The 36-year-old world champion moved from the front passenger seat to the back just before the vehicle embarked on its fateful journey.
Joshua lands in UK
According to reports from the Daily Mail, Joshua landed at London Stansted Airport on Friday night and is now recovering at his home.
Following the deaths of his strength coach, Sina Ghami and personal trainer, Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele, the funerals are scheduled for Sunday, January 4, at the London Central Mosque.
The two men were killed in a road traffic accident near Lagos earlier this week. It remains unclear if Joshua will attend the service.
Further details have surfaced in court, revealing that the driver, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, 47, was operating the vehicle without a valid driver's licence.
Kayode appeared at Sagamu High Court on Friday, where he pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including dangerous driving causing death.
During the hearing, Kayode, who has been employed by Joshua for over three years, claimed the vehicle's brakes failed.
His lawyer, Olalekan Abiodun, told reporters, "My client has pleaded not guilty and what happened was an accident. I haven't had a full chance to speak with him yet, but I know he is saying the brakes did not work."
Abiodun also explained the reason for the seat change, stating that Joshua was asked to move to the back because his size was obstructing the driver's view of the wing mirror. "From what I understand, Latif was in front and then changed seats with Anthony," he added.
Kayode was granted bail set at 5 million Naira (approximately £2,580) and his trial is scheduled to continue on January 20.
