Former Liverpool defender Steve Nicol has laid into Liverpool supporters for booing Trent Alexander-Arnold in the Reds’ 2-2 draw with Arsenal on Sunday.

The defender recently announced his departure from his boyhood club, with a transfer to Real Madrid expected in the summer after the expiration of his current contract.

While Arne Slot did not include the right-back in the lineup against Arsenal, the defender was introduced for Conor Bradley in the 67th minute, only to be greeted by boos from several supporters.

Speaking on ESPN, the erstwhile full-back was disappointed by the reaction of the Anfield crowd to the departing right-back.

“I couldn’t believe what I was hearing,” said Nicol. “I was absolutely disgusted. I did not think that was what Liverpool fans were like.

“I didn’t think that’s what Liverpool’s history was about. Everybody who returns to Anfield should never in my opinion be booed.

“And I would love to say that it was the usual small minority, but unfortunately, it wasn’t. It almost seemed 50-50.

“I was absolutely disgusted. This was absolutely classless and I did not expect it from Liverpool fans.”

The game itself saw Slot’s team lose a two-goal half-time lead to play out a draw with Mikel Arteta’s men.

Alexander-Arnold went close to a winner with a free-kick following Mikel Merino’s sending-off for a second yellow, while Andy Robertson had a late winner ruled out.
