Los Blancos had a difficult week after suffering back-to-back defeats in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.

However, they recovered from those losses, securing a 2-1 away victory over Alavés and maintaining their second position on the table.

Kylian Mbappe was on target for the visitors as he extended his goal tally to 17 for the season and is on course to break or match Cristiano Ronaldo’s 2013 59 goals in a calendar year.

As it happened

Retaining the lineup from the 2-1 Champions League defeat against Manchester City, Xabi Alonso fielded an unchanged side.

Real Madrid dominated the proceedings and got the first goal in the 24th minute from a Kylian Mbappe strike from inside the box.

Early in the second half, Carlos Vicente got the equaliser for Alaves after making contact with a cross on the edge of the box and finishing clinically with a shot inside the right post.

However, Madrid’s attacking quality proved too strong as Rodrygo got his team in front from a superb work from Vinicius Junior.

Real Madrid held on to seal the win in the remaining 15 minutes of the game, as they continue putting pressure on league leaders Barcelona.
