AFCON 2025: Ahmed Musa phased out as Eric Chelle releases 54-man preliminary list

Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has released the initial 54-man preliminary list for the AFCON, which he is expected to whittle down to 28 names before the deadline on December 11.

The comprehensive list contained 23 attackers, 12 midfielders, 13 defenders, six goalkeepers, and a number of debutants.

The list all but confirms that Ahmed Musa's time with the Super Eagles has come to an end. At the same time, it sparked speculation about the availability of players like Ola Aina and Felix Agu, who are currently recovering from injury.

The list contained five players from the NFPL amid criticisms of Eric Chelle's aversion to calling up domestic players. Former Super Eagles defender Kenneth Omeruo is on the other side of the divide, however, arguing that players from the Nigerian top flight division do not compete when in camp.
