AFCON 2023: 3 Tactical changes Peseiro made to send Cameroon home

Jose Peseiro implemented some tactical changes to help Nigeria defeat Cameroon in the AFCON 2023 round of 16.

Jose Peseiro's decision to deploy five defenders proved instrumental in stifling Cameroon's attacking capabilities during the match.

Peseiro's decision to transition to a back three, featuring defenders like Troost-Ekong, Semi Ajayi, and Calvin Bassey, significantly bolstered Nigeria's defensive resilience propelling them into the quarter-finals of AFCON 2023.

Peseiro's strategic acumen extended beyond defensive adjustments, as he granted Ademola Lookman the freedom to express himself on the field.

Although initially positioned on the left of a dynamic front three, Lookman was given the liberty to roam and exploit dangerous pockets of space and the decision bore fruit as Lookman delivered an outstanding all-around performance, netting two goals and earning a well-deserved Man of the Match accolade.

Implementing a defensive high line proved to be a shrewd move by Peseiro, limiting the time Cameroon had on the ball and disrupting their attacking rhythm. 

The relentless and hardworking efforts of midfielders Alex Iwobi and Frank Onyeka played a crucial role in establishing dominance in the midfield, and by pressuring Cameroon and winning key battles in the center of the park, The Super Eagles gained a physical and mental advantage.
