Ademola Lookman: Gasperini credits CAF Player of the Year favourite for Atalanta's success

Atalanta have been on a roll since the tail end of last season, winning the UEFA Europa League thanks to Lookman scoring a historic hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen

This season, the Nigeria international has continued to impress, registering nine goals and five assists in 15 appearances across all competitions.

Gasperini attributes the team’s success to their Europa League win last season, which boosted their confidence and self-belief.

“We are in a good period of form in Italy and Europe. I’m happy with the performances and results we are getting,” Gasperini told reporters.

“Winning the Europa League last season helped us grow in confidence and self-belief.

“Many new players have arrived and are improving, but it was last season’s success, driven by players like Lookman, that set the tone.”

Lookman is having the perfect 2024 for club and country. After lighting up AFCON with the Super Eagles and leading Atalanta to European success, the 27-year-old has been rewarded with nominations for the Ballon d'Or, and CAF Player of the Year.

He is the favourite to take home the African honour, following in the footsteps of Victor Osimhen, who won it last year.
