Super Eagles star Ademola Lookman has expressed his delight at scoring his first home goal for Atlético Madrid as he produced a sensational display, scoring once and providing an assist in a 4-0 victory over Barcelona in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final on Thursday night.
The clash at the Metropolitano Stadium saw Diego Simeone’s men seize control early. The hosts took the lead just six minutes into the contest when Barcelona defender Eric García inadvertently turned the ball into his own net.
Atlético doubled their advantage in the 14th minute through Antoine Griezmann. Lookman then added his name to the scoresheet in the 33rd minute, finishing confidently to make it 3-0.
The Nigerian forward capped a superb first-half performance by turning provider moments before the break, setting up Julián Álvarez to fire home Atlético’s fourth goal and complete a dominant opening 45 minutes.
What Lookman said
Speaking after the match, Lookman expressed his delight at scoring his first home goal for the club.
“I’m very, very happy. Of course, scoring is good, but I think the team played really well tonight. In the box, we were very professional, and today we showed a great level of teamwork,” he told Sporty TV.
While acknowledging the magnitude of the result, Lookman insisted the tie is far from over.
He added, “It’s a big victory, but we have more games before the second leg. We need to keep the same mindset and focus on what’s ahead. We’re excited about the days to come.”
Since joining Atlético Madrid from Atalanta in the winter transfer window, Lookman has made an immediate impact. In just three appearances, he has already recorded two goals and two assists.
